Frigidaire Celebrates 90 Years of Innovations in the Appliance Industry

Frigidaire celebrates 90 years of innovations in the appliance industry

Frigidaire, a well-known innovator in household appliances, is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

Ninety years ago, Frigidaire began as a pioneer in the new era of electrical refrigeration.  In 1918, General Motors purchased the refrigerator company that became known as Frigidaire

Through the decades, Frigidaire has been a leading appliance innovator; introducing features and styling that have shaped kitchens around the world.  As a result of Frigidaire’s advancements in refrigeration, the name Frigidaire became synonymous with refrigerators.  Consumers began to refer to their refrigerators as “The Frigidaire” and many still call it by that name today.

In 1929 Frigidaire introduced the first chest-type home food freezer.  Families could then safely preserve a large quantity of meats, home grown fruits and vegetables for future consumption.  The freezer has had a significant impact on shopping habits and the retail environment.

In 1948 Frigidaire pioneered the first ever combination refrigerator/freezer with a completely separate freezer section, further increasing the amount of food that could be frozen and preserved for future use.  A new industry standard was also set in 1950 when Frigidaire manufactured the first 30-inch wide electric cooker range. This size continues to be the standard in North American homes and has impacted the way that meals are prepared.  By the mid-1950’s kitchen styling became the trend when Frigidaire offered the first colour-matched appliances.  A new home with matching appliances was a dream come true for any couple.

Convenience was the idea behind two enhancements in the 60’s and 70’s.  Enjoying a refreshing cold beverage became easier in 1965 when Frigidaire launched the first automatic ice maker which delivered cubes to the ice saver on the door.  Then in 1974, ice, juice and water service through the door on a top mount refrigerator made it even simpler to enjoy your favorite beverage.

Health and well being were the primary factors when Frigidaire introduced the industry’s first built-in ice and water refrigerator filtration system in 1996.  The PureSource™ Ice and Water Filter in side-by-side refrigerators reduced lead, chlorine, particulates and cysts to make ice and water healthier and give it better taste, odour and clarity.  The filter was easy to install and cost much less and was more convenient than bottled water.

Frigidaire’s advancements in household appliances have had a significant impact on the lives of consumers worldwide.
